Victoria's Story
posted May 25, 2005
May 2001, I got married and my husband and
I knew right away we wanted to have kids. I was only
24 years old but always wanted to have a baby.
Well, I didn't have to wait long. A month
later I was pregnant! We were so excited and couldn't
wait. We had no idea how many complications there could
be... and it seemed like they all happened to me.
I was having a baby boy and things were
fine until my fourth month when they did the triple
panel blood work and my level of AFP was way off, maybe
indicating a neural tube defect. We quickly decided
to have an amnio done to rule it out. It came back negative,
but the amnio had made a hole in the sac and I was leaking
amniotic fluid. I made it to almost 24 weeks and then
i started bleeding. The ultrasound indicated the baby
had stopped growing at 19 weeks. We all knew that once
a baby stops growing, it doesn't just start.
We planned for a late-term medical abortion
as we had no choice. The baby was getting no blood and
no oxygen. The placenta was also immature and i had
a oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid). To make a long
story short, I went into labor the night before I was
to have the procedure done. It was the best outcome,
they said. The most difficult part was walking out of
the maternity ward empty-handed.
Three years have passed since then and
we have tried so hard to get pregnant and nothing. We
were so heartbroken and the thought of never being a
mom and dad just devestated us and I could not deal
with it. I went to the Center of IVF in Miami and I
was tested. Nothing was wrong with me, and nothing was
wrong with my husband, his count was great, but his
sperm motility was slow. So we decided to do IUI (intrauterine
insemination) which is MUCH cheaper than IVF,
and it's for couples who really don't have a problem
and just can't seem to get pregnant.
I took Clomid for 5 days and went in
for the procedure where they do an ultrasound to see
if my egg has been released and they take the sperm
and with a catheter place it directly into the uterus,
and boom! 2 weeks later I got a call back I was pregnant!
It was the best 1200.00 dollars we had ever spent! I
am 5 months pregnant now and everything is going great!
I am having a little girl. I don't know what tomorrow
will hold but this time we are hopeful...
Just don't give up hope but ask your doctor
if IUI is for you. It's less costly and no side effects.
The only medication you take a 5 days of clomid, :)...Good
Luck and wish me luck!
